I ran across this commentary of John Chapter 3 in my Bible. I think it would help us to understand the mindset of many families we are trying to reach this year with VBS. Many people think of this life as all there is. They make daily decisions based upon that thinking. They may be miserable in this life, struggling through family problems, drug/alcohol abuse, problems at work, depression etc.. They may not even want to think about "eternal" life because that sounds miserable to them. They often try to protect themselves from their fears by putting their trust in something they do or have. Like their good works, charitable donations, their skills or intelligence, money or possessions. However, only GOD can save us from the one thing we really need to fear-eternal misery in hell! We start believing in God by recognizing our own ways of making things better are not sufficient. We can't do it alone. We need God's help & the hope of his promise of eternal life without pain, sickness, death or misery of any kind. Eternal life doesn't have to be a continuation of misery but a new life with nothing but joy. Please think of someone you know that seems miserable or depressed without Jesus Christ. Pray for them every day this week and extend an invitation to them to Church or VBS! It is our job to show them the way of hope!
