I am a retired art teacher. I did an Egyptian prom one year and made torches. I will try to explain how I did it I thought they looked great. I made a tube out of poster board about 2 inches wide and 18 inches long, At the end I made another tube about 4 inches wide by 5 inches long and attached it to one end . Cover the whole thing with paper Mache you can use brown paper bags or just spray it with gold paint. Your choice. I used brown paper and painted hieroglyphs on the side of the large tube. For the flame I took clear pop bottles cut off the bottom and cut the sides into flame shapes. Leave the top attached .If you take a heat gum or hair dryer to it will melt a little and curl. If you add yellow orange and red paint it looks just like flames. For the prom we put small flashlights in them.

I have left over blue cellophane that I bought for VBS last year. It came on a roll. I am going to decorate our alter as the Nile river with the cellophane and put "grass" along the edge. I will have a hippo sticking up out of the river. I will have a back drop of some sort that probably have camels and such. Still in the planning stage, but I can just see the kids standing on the other side of the Nile between the river and the camels for the closing program.

For the torches...do you use the 20 oz pop bottles or the 2 liter?

Groark ~ if you could find or even draw a simple picture of your torches that would help a lot! Your torches sound amazing I would love to see and try to replicate them :) I love the River idea too!!!! Great job everyone ;)
