The music is awesome BUT I'm disappointed that there is not an actual music time for the kids. The songs are very 'motion intensive' and I'm thinking it will be hard to learn them just from the little time we have in the opening and closing assemblies. Do you ever do a fourth time rotation and include a music time??

Hi Judy -- we've heard from some people who have added a fourth rotation in which they do a combination of music and missions. Another idea is to add a music component to your snack time.

It's hard for young kids to learn motions AND lyrics anyway. My advice is to just stick with the lyrics with maybe a few hand motions, that way you don't overwhelm them.

Our church only has opening assembly and cuts out the closing ceremony. We have four rotations: Bible Study, Crafts, Music, and we combine the fourth rotation with snack and recreation.

This is only our second year doing a VBS. We found great success last year using 5 rotations. Bible, snack, games, crafts and music. In the music rotation the children learn the lyrics and the motions. They learned 5 songs last year in no time. We had children in Pre-K through 5th grade. Even the youngest ones were able to pick up both lyrics and hand motions quickly. They get both verbal and motor memory doing both so the learning is faster. It was an extremely high energy rotation and the children (as well as the adults) love it!

We also do a music time in the rotations, and it works out very well. We teach different songs to differnt groups, and then have the groups perform their song during the Parent's program. We also will be using Blast Off as our "Main Theme" song. This will be taught to all of the groups during our Opening Assembly. We have limited some of the motions to make it easier for the kids learn.

I'm wondering why the Buddy Davis song "No Matter What You Know" doesnt have the split track (accompaniment version) like the other songs do.

We're adding a Music rotation to our schedule and calling it the Sonic Sound Lab. This is where we will concentrate on music w/ motions and adjusting what is taught to each age group.

The Buddy Davis song was done several years ago without the split-track (it wasn't specific to this VBS program like the others were), so we weren't able to include one with the other songs.

We practice our songs in the closing assembly. We will be assigning certain songs to each class, and having Blast Off as the song for all of the classes to sing. We usually don't use all the songs, just a select few. We have done motions in the past, but we found it was harder for the kids to learn it all in the short time period that we have. We only have time for 2 1/2 hours for 5 nights, unlike the 3 hours it recommends. We just don't have enough adults who can pitch in, and these days everyone works...back in the old days most of the women were home anyway. It was a lot easier to have VBS back then.
